Mossentology 101

What is it about Kate Moss? The fashion world goes gaga when she simply pairs a tank with her boyfriend's baggy trousers. It seems everything the 5’6 supermodel slips into ends up on the runways of fashion's top designers and in the closets of millions. Have you ever seen a simple white tee shirt look so good? Fashion experts, editors, and style junkies everywhere have tried to crack Kate’s code on style. They’ve dissected, analyzed, recreated, and even joined her on shopping trips all to discover it’s nearly impossibly to reproduce Kate’s ever changing, highly celebrated (and copied) personal style. But with millions of followers across the globe and Kate being an authority of what we’ll wear next season, LuxuryFashion.com thinks it’s time for this fashion goddess to get her own religion (if L. Ron Hubbard gets one, why can’t Kate?) Fashionistas across the globe, LuxuryFashion.com presents: Mossentology.

Friends and followers say Kate is almost a natural psychic when it comes to fashion. Kate’s not ahead of the curve in the sense that she’s always looking for the next big thing; Kate determines the next big thing. Someone with a good sense of style will wear something before other people do, drawing inspiration from runway and magazines. Someone with an iconic sense of style will wear something before anyone else thinks to, and then be the one that inspires the next season of what’s on the runway and in magazines. A true muse, Kate’s always had that natural iconic sense of style. Even when she first came onto the scene at 14 years old she was wearing grunge before the grunge movement, vintage before it was cool to wear used clothes, Mandarin before the Asian-style fad, and bohemian before the 70’s comeback. You can thank the fashion gods for Kate Moss, because if Karl Lagerfeld had his way we’d all be 85 pounds wearing only black or tweed. But even the man-with-the-fan can’t resist sprinkling bits of Kate into his collection, as evidence with the Pirate boot look-alikes Chanel put out a few years back after Kate kicked in the door on the slouchy boot trend that’s still running rapid today. About five years ago she walks into a vintage store in London and picks up a dirty pair of boots from the 80’s. The worn, slouched tan suede flats were a departure from the clean black leather stiletto boots that were dominating footwear at the time. Being Kate, she paired them with mini skirts or stuffed her jeans into them, and while everyone else was busy polishing their Jimmy Choo’s she was kicking up her feet at parties around the globe. In a matter of weeks fashionistas were mobbing vintage stores and there was such a huge demand that Vivienne Westwood, the boot's original designer, was forced to come out with a 90's version of the Pirate style. Give Kate an industrial strength garbage bag and she’ll probably make it an off-the-shoulder number cinched with a gold studded wide belt, paired with some sling backs and a clutch. Next thing you know Vogue will be chanting “Garbage bag chic!” and Hefty will be selling for $1200 a box. It was Kate who was one of the first to be seen with the now uber-popular Balenciaga Le Dix bag, before it was gobbled up by “Katepycats” Linsday Lohan, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mischa Barton, Kate Bosworth, and Kirsten Dunst. Knockoffs of the bag are now available to millions at web sites and malls across the country; even Target has a version!

At 31, Kate is considered a leader of the fashion pack, an ahead-of-her-time dresser, and an inspiration to the world's best designers, editors, and photographers, not to mention a slew of young Hollywood’s finest. Current red-hot stylist Rachel Zoe isn’t afraid to admit she’s the number one inspiration for clients like Lohan, Barton, Richie, and Jessica Simpson. While today’s teens spend desperately to look like clones of Mary Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie, celebs like Olsen and Ritchie are all trying to be clones of Kate Moss, but often fail miserably to replicate the personal style of their icon.

For Kate, however, putting looks together seems more like a natural instinct. For those less blessed with the style skill, take note: a huge secret to achieving Kate’s style is to make it look as effortless as possible. So what if it took you 3.2 days of pre-planning to put together an outfit? Nobody ever truly knows how long Miss Moss debates over her outfits for the simple fact that she always leaves something unkempt. She’ll wear a $15,000 silk beaded gown and be dripping in diamonds, yet she’ll slide into a pair of beat up vintage metallic pumps and just simply run her fingers through her hair to style it. If it were anyone else, critics would be saying, “The outfit would have worked if she changed the shoes” or “You think the girl could afford a brush”, but Kate seems to pull it off flawlessly, even inspiring the next season to be about distressed pumps and bedhead.

Another secret of Kate’s style is she always keeps us on our toes. She doesn’t reveal too much of her personality through her clothing (and if she does it usually reflects her carefree attitude) and she’s constantly changing styles and drawing from different eras of inspiration. One night it might be mod, while another it’ll be the roaring 20’s or 70’s rock & roll, or 50’s Marilyn Monroe or the Sex Pistols… or maybe all at the same time. She mixes it up, takes risks, and doesn’t act like anything she owns is super special. Sure, she might have a $12,000 Hermes bag, but she keeps it as an overstuffed everyday bag, even using it as a diaper bag for her daughter when she was younger. She’ll tote a denim Birkin to the drugstore (she owns one of only three in the world) or scoff up the kind of custom made Alexander McQueen shoes that you would keep in a climate-controlled closet and only pull out for your future grandchildren.

A lot of Kate’s style is lost in translation, so to speak. Kate isn’t as mainstream or in the spotlight as, say, Mary Kate Olsen or Lindsay Lohan, so when Kate wears something it’s not seen by as many people. Young Hollywood starlets like the Olsens or Linsday, however, are in the tabloids and magazines constantly so we are seeing every outfit they wear and every Kate look they try (unsuccessfully) to recreate. What happens then is teenagers look at this and think that’s how things are supposed to be worn, and soon our cities are plagued with an army of mismatched girls who look like they’re trying too hard. Cowboy boots, ripped shirts, leggings, and vests must all be worn with extreme caution and attempted only if you know what you’re doing.

Naturally, in finding your own style you should pull from different icons and see what works best on you. Even those who can afford a $6500 a day stylist still can’t pull off Mossentology.

One thing is for certain: when Kate relocates to her new apartment in Beverly Hills she'll certainly have young Hollywood at her feet. Not only does self-diagnosed “Kate Junkie” Lindsay Lohan live in the same building, but nowadays mini A-listers are trying to live out the hard partying lifestyle the supermodel helped revitalize. Since the early 90’s age of the supermodel, Kate and Co. brought back the chain-smoking, champagne and cocaine fueled, string-of-boyfriends 70’s Studio 54-esque lifestyle and young starlets have been taking notes. With Kate coming to LA, hopefully she’ll also bring back another trend: natural beauty. A flat-chested, fare-skinned female in Los Angeles who doesn’t fix her teeth and get hair extensions? Now this I just have to see.

Mossentology’s Ten Commandments

  1. Thou Shall Go Back to Their Roots: Before Kate got into modeling she grew up on a very tight budget. She would go down to the local vintage store and buy clothes by the pound. To avoid looking like she had no other option than to buy used clothes, every day she’d come up with clever ways to mix pieces to make herself look vintage chic. These days, with an estimated $30 million in the bank, she can be more choosy. She favors vintage Yves Saint Laurent, Ossie Clark, Dior, Azzedine Alaia and Hermes.
  2. Thou Shall Mix It Up: Sure Kate has a closet full of Gucci, Pucci, Prada, Dolce, Versace, and just about every designer from your wish list, but most of Kate’s pieces are no-name vintage and thrift store finds. If you do have fabulous European couture in your wardrobe, never ever wear just that. For day, mix your $1300 beaded top with beat-up jeans, boots, and a distressed handbag. At night, wear your couture, but dress it down with a vintage clutch or don’t over glam your hair, makeup, and accessories. Not only will you look fashionably daring, but people will assume you have an entire brownstone jam-packed with clothes at your disposal because why else would you mix couture and worn-in pieces on an everyday basis?
  3. Thou Shall Not Hoard: What’s the point in buying something if you are never going to wear it? You only live once and you only get a few decades to walk in heels before you start to have hip problems, so why not wear the shoes you blew a month’s rent on? The handbag that set you back the down payment on your house? The jacket that you chose rather than helping your boyfriend through med school? What’s the point in buying them if you’re just going to look at them? Yeah, they might look like a work of art, but if it’s not framed behind a glass plate it better be on you! Go food shopping in your $1400 boots or bring your $4300 bag to the Starbucks. Not only will you look like a fashion Czar, you’ll walk with more confidence in your Manolo Blahnik step.
  4. Thou Shall Not Overdose on Trends: Of course, you should have certain trendy staples in your closet, but you should never wear trends from head to toe. This is a mistake that many Hollywood lovlies make- let’s call it the Kitson Curse. Trendy pieces sold at stores like Kitson and Intuition are great, but it’s too easy to overdose. One look in Us Weekly and you’re met with some serious celeb offenders. An A. Kurtz cap, multi-layer horn necklace, LaRok sequin tank, Joseph fur vest, True Religion distressed jeans, UGGs, and a Chloe bag are all wonderful separates… but you don’t need to show the entire world how trendy your closet is with one outfit. Do as Kate does- put the Chloe bag with a basic sundress, the horn necklaces with a simple outfit or one-color dress, and let the fur vest be the main focus of the outfit. A trendy item should be the conversation piece and stand out while everything else is kept simple.
  5. Thou Shall Know What Looks Good on Them: Kate sticks to the looks that work best on her. Since she is petite (five inches shorter than the average model) you can bet all her vintage finds and couture pieces have been tailored exclusively for her. This way the clothes fit so perfectly that people think nobody else but Kate would be able to wear it. As a supermodel, Kate has had more than enough experience trying on all different clothes for all different occasions. By now, Kate knows what works best on her body. Cigarette style pants, skinny high-waist jeans, cropped leggings, long fitted dresses, and short skirts and shorts are all wardrobe staples.
  6. Thou Shall Play Favorites: One of Kate's favorite designers is Narciso Rodriguez. Nobody can forget the tight gray dress of his she wore while accompanying then-boyfriend Johnny Depp to a Cannes Film Festival premiere. Among a posse of black and white she stood out like... well.... Kate Moss. Since then she has depended on him for night (dresses, slacks) and day (casual tops and skirts) looks. Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci are other designers Kate chooses for both day and night.
  7. Thou Shall Agree that Less is More: This approach has always worked for Kate, down to grooming, outfits, and accessories. Her signature bedhead, unpolished fingernails and minimal makeup is typical Kate whether she be at an A-list event or walking down the street. As for jewelry, she may dabble into diamonds for a photo shoot, but mostly it’ll be a single long necklace, a simple watch, or a chunky cocktail ring.
  8. Thou Shall Choose Key Pieces: In Mossentology, there are four main wardrobe staples: handbags, jackets, tights and boots. For handbags, Kate sticks with only a few styles and grabs every color and fabric available. Take her to die for collection of Hermes Birkins (in white, black, red, canvas, denim, and orange) and Balenciaga, Luella, Burberry, and Mulberry bags. Jackets are another essential: at least one vintage fur (or faux fur, depending on your PETA stance), a chic leather motorcycle jacket, a fitted blazer, a trench coat, and a denim jacket. Thick tights are worn under sundresses and miniskirts and are either full, cropped at the ankle or cut at the top for a above-the-knee look. Finally, boots are a necessity. Anklet booties, suede or leather flats, Pirate style, low heeled buckle boots, suede knee high boots, and fur lined wedge heel boots are all required styles.
  9. Thou Shall Feel When in Doubt, Do Denim: Never underestimate the power of a good pair of jeans. Denim can always be translated quickly into day or night looks and is always a safe investment.
  10. Thou Shall Be Themselves: If you take every fashion tip on this list you’re already making your first mistake. Even though Kate cites Twiggy and Marianne Faithfull as style inspirations, you’ll never see her taking all of their style secrets. Different people, different careers, different personalities, different body types. The trick is to make everything yours. You should feel like everything you wear was made especially for you. You should feel comfortable and confident in everything you wear. Half the battle of looking fabulous and being able to “pull it off” is feeling confident in what you’re wearing.
